What is a Puppy Raising Program?
Volunteer families to take a guide puppy home for basic training from 8 weeks of age until it is ready to start its formal training between 14-18 months of age.
Our puppies learn differently, but they still have fun. They need to go to places with you such as church, grocery stores, cinemas, museums and other destinations for socialization training. Other activities like taking a bus or attending football games are fun for puppies. Puppies can also enjoy interactive games such as hide-and-seek.
We will provide training sessions to you & teach the puppy how to have fun. You will be able to see it grow and become a responsible dog that is willing and happy to help its future partner.
What is a boarder?
During guide dog training, the dog from the age of 14 months to 24 months old will live with the boarder family. Boarders would need to drop off their dogs to HKGDA’s training centre from 8-10am and pick up 5-7pm every working day.
Involvements for Puppy Raisers (PR) and Boarders (B):
- Willing to provide a welcoming and safe environment for a dog or puppy for the time required.
- Ensuring the dog or puppy is fed and exercised as directed.
- Embedding the same behavior and commands as your supervisor.
- In the event of an emergency, ensure the dog or puppy receives veterinary care and Guide Dogs is informed immediately.
- Attending the assessments in different development ages.
What are the skills or experience required?
- All Puppy Raisers and Boarders will be required to attend training sessions (approx 2-3 times per month). Those handling younger and larger/more active dogs need more training.
- Enjoy working with dogs and have suitable accommodation.
- Perseverance to help support the training of the dogs.
- Good communication skills.
- If you are interested to be our puppy raiser or boarder, please fill in the application below.
- Whatever the outcome of your interview, we will inform you within 3-4 working weeks. If you are accepted your name will be added to the waiting list and you will be contacted as soon as a suitable dog is ready.
